The person making the nomination for WAPED awards must be a current member of WAPED. The person (or organization) they are nominating does not need to be a WAPED member.

Nominations for WAPED awards must include the following information:

1. Name of nominee and organization they represent.

2. Name and contact information of nominator.

3. Letter of Nomination, which includes the following:

• A brief narrative history of this nominee's involvement in disability issues;

• The reason this individual/agency/organization deserves special recognition;

• Examples of exemplary service and/or contributions to the success of students with disabilities.

Letters of support are encouraged, but not required, and may come from WAPED members, supervisors, co-workers, or students who have first-hand knowledge of the nominee’s service and qualifications.

AWARDS


The President's Award: This award is for outstanding achievement on behalf of people with disabilities. It is presented to an individual or an organization whose activity in the preceding years has made a major contribution to the education of people with disabilities on a state-wide-basis. Persons/organizations eligible to receive this award would be, for example, 1) a member of the state legislature who has made a major contribution to the passage of legislation which increases educational opportunities for people with disabilities, 2) an employer whose efforts provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities and inspire others to do likewise, 3) a member of a profession or other group whose zeal for disability issues has heightened interest and enlarged the contributions of that profession or group, and/or 4) a person with a disability whose example has inspired others and caused a statewide impact upon disability issues.


Outstanding Member/Educator Award: This award brings recognition to a member of WAPED who has made significant contributions toward providing and improving access to higher education at their institution as well as in their community and Washington state. The recipient will be evaluated on his/her leadership, knowledge, creativity, and management skills in developing and providing services to students with disabilities in higher education. Potential nominees include disability services directors, coordinators or programs for students with disabilities, accommodation providers, etc., in a postsecondary setting.


The Organization Award: This award is presented to an organization with an outstanding record of service to people with disabilities. The organization may be one whose principle objectives are in the field of disability or education, employment, technology, rehabilitation, or other services for individuals with disabilities. An organization eligible to receive the organization award might include, 1) an organization that has established a unique service program to better serve people with disabilities, 2) an organization that has, through its initiative and creativity, developed programs which have contributed significantly to the removal of barriers to persons of disability on a state-wide basis, and/or, 3) an organization that has aced as a catalyst in the community to improve and develop educational services for people with disabilities.


The Ben Webinger Meritorious Service Award: This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated years of service and leadership to WAPED through any segment or combination of Association activities or life. Emphasis is placed on length of service, level of service, and evidence of outstanding service and leadership to WAPED. Potential nominees might include a member with a sustained membership in WAPED (Required) who has provided outstanding membership efforts and leadership for a period of several years. An exception to the membership requirements may be made for individuals who are no longer members but who may have made substantial contributions to WAPED in its formative years (1979-1995) prior to the implementation of these awards.


Achievement Award: This is an award for technical and/or professional achievement in promoting awareness and development in issues of education of persons with disabilities. This award may be presented to a person or organization that has, in preceding years made a major contribution of importance to increasing knowledge and awareness of disability issues in education or has developed techniques or methods in the application of such knowledge in higher education.

Outstanding Student Award: This award recognizes a student with a disability who is currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution in Washington State. This award may be presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to his/her institution or community or the State of Washington. The recipient will be evaluated on his/her academic/vocational achievements, extra-curriculum involvement, community service and demonstrated self-advocacy.
